CHANGES TO TRC EDUCATION DAY PLANS

The TRC Education Day for school children from the PEI has been amended to involve two phases. We felt that more time was needed to engage with Indigenous peoples regarding how they think this day should be designed.

Phase Two (date to be decided) will include teachers and their students.

NOTICE FROM THE BOOKSTORE

The UPEI bookstore is once again looking for textbook orders for the upcoming semester. Book orders for the Winter 2017 semester can be submitted by email or through the on-line order form.

Please submit your book orders to the UPEI Bookstore as soon as possible.   The Bookstore is requesting ordrers be in by 09-Nov-2016 to ensure they arrive for the beginning of the Winter session.

Please be sure to send the correct ISBN, especially for text packages and/or e-books to ensure ordering of the proper text books.

If there is no text book required for a course, it would be greatly appreciated to notify the Bookstore so that a note can be made on the student text list. Also, please indicate if your course is cross listed.

Please include the ISBN for any access codes/e-books that your course offers in your order. Please indicate if the access code is a requirement for the students to pass the course, or if it would be recommended for studying.

The Bookstore would like to be able to give students more options for course materials at the Bookstore. (Binder editions, E-texts, Softcover, Used Books etc)

If you require students to have other course materials such as specific calculators, dissection kits, clickers, graph paper, notebooks etc. you can email the Bookstore to ensure there are sufficient quantities in the store. Many students take advantage of the different forms of payment they offer such as charging to their student account, so being able to offer the supplies as well as the text provides them with the convenience of purchasing everything together.

The Faculty encourages all instructors to utilize the service of the bookstore as much as possible.

Your cooperation is much appreciated.

CLIPS FROM COLLEAGUES

HALLOWE’EN SPECIAL – LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS

(Shared by Sean Wiebe) –   Little Shop of Horrors is the perfect musical comedy for Hallowe’en-time — a total eclipse of the sun; the mysterious Audrey II, the plant with attitude and appetite; a Faustian deal with the devil; the plant’s diet of blood; a sadistic leather-jacketed dentist who dies of laughing gas.

As a sort of Hallowe’en celebration, ACT (a community theatre) is offering two special features for the performances this Saturday and Sunday.

There is a special family ticket bargain for the two matinees (2:30 on Saturday and Sunday).  The charge for children 14 and under will be just $10.  They need to be accompanied by an adult, since the show is considered to have a PG10 rating.  That special price is available only at-the-door (which is cash only).

The second special feature is literally a treat: anyone who wears a Hallowe’en costume (without mask) to any one of the Saturday or Sunday performances (whether evening or matinee) will get a candy treat.

Little Shop of Horrors plays this weekend, October 27th to 30th, at the Florence Simmons Performance Hall of Holland College (Weymouth Street in downtown Charlottetown).

Tickets are $28 or $25 (senior, student, limited income), and are available in three ways: at online; from the theatre’s box office (Weymouth St) 902-894-6885; or at the door (cash only).

EMERGENCY SAFETY IN MEMORIAL HALL

The emergency guardian and warden lists have been updated for the third and fourth floor of Memorial Hall as follows:

Fourth Floor: Jane Preston is the Warden and Karen-Anne O’Halloran is the back up.  Cathy Hennessey is the Guardian.

Third Floor:  Carolyn Francis is the Warden and Karen-Anne O’Halloran is the back up.  Ashley Clark is the Guardian.

The Warden clears individuals from the buildings/rooms, assigns Guardians to assist those with disabilities, communicates the presence of individuals who have disabilities in the building to Emergency Responders, and secures rooms if possible.  The Guardian assists individuals who have disabilities to a predetermined location on the floor to await evacuation assistance from emergency responders.

The primary gathering point for Memorial Hall is the W.A. Murphy Student Centre.  The alternate location is the Wanda Wyatt Dining Hall.  The type and scope of the emergency may dictate the desired gathering point.  Those evacuating the building should gather at the designated building to wait for further instructions from emergency response staff.

PROGRESS MONITORING PRESENTATION

Tammy Hubley-Little, Director of Leadership and Learning from the PEI Department of Education, Early Learning and Culture, will be speaking to all education students and faculty on the topic of Progress Monitoring.  Progress Monitoring is currently being used in several PEI schools to assess students’ academic performance.  It is an assessment tool which quantifies the student’s rate of improvement, or responsiveness to instruction, while on their educational journey through the PEI education system.  This session is meant to give education students an overview of Progress Monitoring before the students enter the schools for their practicum and faculty an opportunity to become more aware of the initiative.

The presentation takes place on Friday , 14-Oct-2016 at 12pm in Duffy Science Centre, Room 135.  Everyone is welcome.

HEADS UP!

Thank you to everyone who came out to participate in the Faculty Potluck this past Friday.  The food and the company were both fabulous!

Those who could not attend missed a lively game of Heads Up, where we learned…

  • there are a lot of animals that can be signed by “air claws”
  • facing a mirror can give a team an advantage;
  • having an advantage doesn’t mean you win a round.

Thank you to Ron and Erin for hosting, and the Social Committee for organizing this event!

PINK PANTHER

pink-panther1

Panther pride is going pink!  Three of our students have created a fundraiser for our International specialization.  If Amanda Lajo, Vanessa MacDonald, and Sophie Beauregard-Marchand can raise $500 in donations, Sylvain Gagné has generously agreed to dye his beard pink and keep it that way for a week.

If you have spare change, please contribute to this fundraiser by placing it in the bag with Sylvain’s picture on it in the Main Office.

Merci for your generosity (and to Sylvain for his sportsmanship)!

THANK YOU FROM FIONA WALTON

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

My sincere thanks to all of you for providing such a glorious send-off after my 17 years at the Faculty of Education. I am deeply grateful. Tess, the Symposium was just magnificent from the opening ceremony until the closing reception with many trips down memory lane, especially when it came to Inuit education! Julie and the faithful and classy members of the social committee seemed to be doing double duty with gifts at the reception and again at the wonderful coffee gathering when I nearly fell over backwards after seeing that picture of Ireland with an incredibly generous voucher to carry me home to my family this Spring. Then there was that thoughtful gift card for my favourite haunt, Moksha Yoga, and enough wine enough to have a party for several people. Wow, folks, you honoured me in such special ways that I will never forget. Thank you, thank you so much! Finally, to Ron for his heartfelt words and supporting the gala events and gifts! I loved and appreciated everything.

Fiona

CLIPS FROM COLLEAGUES

(Shared by Tim) – 8th Annual Nichola Goddard Foundation Fundraising Dinner

Sally and I, along with our honourary chairperson, Wes MacAleer, would like to invite you to the 8th Annual Nichola Goddard Foundation fundraiser, which this year will be on Saturday 19 November 2016 at the APM Centre in Cornwall, PEI. We are thrilled that Mayor Naheed Nenshi  of Calgary will be our guest speaker.

The Foundation has now endowed two university scholarships (at UPEI and the University of Calgary) and is currently contributing to a canine heart rate monitor at the Atlantic Veterinary College (Nichola loved dogs!). Fundraising for Light Up Papua New Guinea continues. Over 1.5 million people in rural areas of Papua New Guinea now have access to solar powered lights in clinics and birthing centres, because of Foundation support.

Chef Guy LeClair has volunteered to cook a three course dinner – he and Sheri-Lynn have been great supporters of past events. As usual, our intrepid team of volunteers will serve. There will be a silent auction with the usual random selection of interesting items – some which we already have in hand and a number that are still being collected. The menu and the list of items for the silent auction will be circulated prior to the event.

Tickets can be purchased for $125 online at www.nicholagoddard.com or by cheque, made payable to the Nichola Goddard Foundation and mailed to 45 Parkside Drive, Charlottetown PE C1E 1N1. A tax deductible receipt for $90 will be provided for each ticket purchased.

Should you require an invoice or further information, please contact me by phone (902) 569 5665 or email at goddards3@gmail.com.

We have partnered with Holiday Inn Express this year. Rooms are available for $109.00/night plus tax and include a hot breakfast. There is a hockey tournament on the weekend of November 19, so please book early. Rooms at this special rate will be held only until October 20. Please call the hotel directly 1-902-892-1201 and ask for the rate for the Nichola Goddard Foundation or use this link.

If you are unable to attend, please consider buying a ticket. We will find a good person to fill the seat.

Look forward to seeing you on November 19th.

Tim
