linus byop2

Thank you to everyone that responded to the Halloween invite. Unfortunately, the Social Committee has decided to postpone this event. We are looking to host another event around the Christmas holiday. Happy Halloween!

== // == // == // == // ==

A CHALLENGE FROM THE DEAN

Halloween fun in the Faculty of Education does not end with the postponement of our BYOP event….

Memorial Hall is not one of the haunted buildings on campus… or is it?   A Halloween door challenge is issued to all residents of Memorial Hall.  An esteemed panel of judges from the Education Society, will make the rounds on 31-Oct-2014 to determine the spookiest, freakiest, most-festive Halloween door.  Will it be yours?  (Dare ya’!)

== // == // == // == // ==

HEALTHY CAMPUS COMMITTEE

After two Halloween announcements, this one is kind of like the house that gives out apples for trick or treat…

The Healthy Campus Committee is looking for a member from the Faculty of Education.  The Committee meets every couple of months, and you can read their mandate here.  If you would be interested in serving on this important committee, please contact Michelle Arbing.

MACLAUCHLAN PRIZES FOR EFFECTIVE WRITING – FACULTY/STAFF DEADLINE

The MacLauchlan Prizes for Effective Writing honour the twelve years Wade MacLauchlan served as the president of UPEI and provide a valuable way to recognize the importance of effective writing as a foundational skill for academic success and lifelong learning.

The MacLauchlan prizes include up to three prizes for Facutly/Staff leadership in the development of writing among students. These prizes are available for faculty and staff who have shown exceptional leadership in the development of writing among students at UPEI during the previous academic year (September 1 to August 31). The deadline for application is 06-Oct-2014.

http://www.upei.ca/studentlife/scholarshipsandawards/791

Faculty and staff can nominate colleagues in a letter addressed to the Selection Committee for the MacLauchlan Prizes for Effective Writing.  If these letters are submitted to the Office of the VP Academic, Edith will see they get to the Selection Committee.

The MacLauchlan Prizes for Effective Writing also includes over 50 prizes for returning undergraduate students based on effective writing excellence in the previous academic year (September 1 to August 31, so this would include both our 12-month and 2-year BEd students). We appreciate your help in encouraging deserving Education students to apply. Links to student application details are here:

OPPORTUNITIES

The following opportunities have been forwarded to the Faculty of Education:

FACULTY OF BUSINESS

Andrew Carrothers in the Faculty of Business has been doing some research work for the Investor Education Fund (IEF), a non profit advocate for financial literacy education funded by fines issued by the Ontario Securities Commission.  He has collected unique primary data on the effectiveness of IEF financial literacy programs in public schools – grades 4 to 12.  He is looking for someone in the education faculty that would be interested in a collaboration opportunity.  He can be reached on campus at 620-5078.

HOLLAND COLLEGE

Gerry Seaward has contacted the faculty regarding a possible research project.  Holland College is moving to a new instructional model in its adult education (AE) program. For over 20 years AE has offered high school credit courses, using an individual self-paced model of instruction; however, this September Holland College will be offering an instructor facilitated cohort model of instruction.  They are interested in exploring overall student success, retention, student attitudes, etc. in the new model and are looking for a grad student or faculty member that might be interested in using this move to a new model as a research project.  Gerry Seaward can be reached at 629-4259 to further discuss this project possibility.

Dr. Lyndsay Moffatt from the Faculty of Education at UPEI is looking for volunteers and research participants for an Intergenerational Gardening and Food Project and Research Study. Dr. Moffatt is looking for 23 Elders (50yrs +) and 23 Young Adults (16-30 yrs). We will be meeting approximately once a month for the school year to plant seeds, make food, sing, talk and tell stories. All volunteers will need an up to date police check. Dr. Moffatt will be studying how the kindergarten language and literacy curricula can be supported through such projects. If you are interested, please email Dr. Moffatt or call (902) 620-5177 to receive more information about the project and the study. Please feel free to distribute this call to friends and family!

A MESSAGE TO DR. LIZ TOWNSEND TO GRADUATE STUDENTS AND INSTRUCTORS

The welcome I am receiving from the Faculty of Education as I start as part-time Coordinator of Graduate Studies is wonderful! I am excited to see what we can accomplish during my one-year contract at 50%. Typically I will be on-site at UPEI for 6 – 7 hours each on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Between times I will keep up with things with an hour or so each day from my home in Belfast, or as they say in distance education ‘anytime, any where’. I may be out and around on campus so if you wish to meet at my office in the Memorial Building, Room 305, you can drop in to see if I’m there or drop in on email. Although everyone has been very open and helpful already, it’s important for me to let you know that the knowledge of Graduate Studies and generosity of Cathy Hennessey and Martha Gabriel helped greatly in luring me back into university life. Thanks for such a warm and enthusiastic reception!
