FACULTY OPPORTUNITIES FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT
LEARNING TO ANALYZE PISA
The DEECD is offering an opportunity to take part in a two-day session (free of charge) on learning how to analyze PISA data. PEI is hosting Atlantic Canada sessions during the last week of October. If you are interested, please let Ron know.
EDUCATIONAL BRIEFS
The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development is in the process of developing and posting educational briefs with the purpose of sharing research-based information throughout public education. The briefs will be short, plain language, literature reviews on relevant and timely topics of interest to teachers and administrators. The briefs will be accessible to all Island teachers on the Department’s Instructional Development website.
The DEECD would like to invite the Faculty of Education to contribute to the collection of educational briefs.
The Faculty’s support of this work would be greatly appreciated. The Department will follow-up with a suggested list of topics in the near future should you indicate interest. Also, they will be pleased to provide website access to members of our faculty and to students registered in graduate and undergraduate education programs.
If interested in this, please contact Elizabeth Costa.

The next Faculty Council meeting will be held on-line on Friday, 08-Aug-2014 at 10:00am. Faculty Council members should check their email for a link to the Blackboard Collaborate meeting room. As noted in that correspondence, to participate in the online meeting, you will need a headset with a microphone. If you don’t have one, the ELC does have a limited number that you can sign out, however please note that the ELC is closed on Friday so it is suggested those requiring a headset from there pick it on Thursday. Meeting materials will be forwarded by email in advance of the meeting.

A MESSAGE TO DR. LIZ TOWNSEND TO GRADUATE STUDENTS AND INSTRUCTORS
The welcome I am receiving from the Faculty of Education as I start as part-time Coordinator of Graduate Studies is wonderful! I am excited to see what we can accomplish during my one-year contract at 50%. Typically I will be on-site at UPEI for 6 – 7 hours each on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Between times I will keep up with things with an hour or so each day from my home in Belfast, or as they say in distance education ‘anytime, any where’. I may be out and around on campus so if you wish to meet at my office in the Memorial Building, Room 305, you can drop in to see if I’m there or drop in on email. Although everyone has been very open and helpful already, it’s important for me to let you know that the knowledge of Graduate Studies and generosity of Cathy Hennessey and Martha Gabriel helped greatly in luring me back into university life. Thanks for such a warm and enthusiastic reception!
Liz

JULY & AUGUST BIRTHDAYS
Birthdays of the Month is Back! Do you have a July or August Birthday? We want to celebrate YOU on August 25th! Let us know your birthday on the chalkboard in the staff lounge (MH 409) so that we can include you in the birthday serenade 🙂 Festivities will begin at 10:30am and everyone is welcome. And if the May/June celebration is any indication, nothing says “we appreciate you” like black icing balloons, and sprinkles. You aren’t going to want to miss this.
