Please be advised that the full text ERIC document collection normally accessed through the US government is currently unavailable during the shutdown. That means students cannot access the PDFs of the “ED” documents. If you have any links in Moodle or elsewhere, or assignments that point students to such documents, you may need to revisit your requirements during this time.

A portion of the documents from 1997 – 2004 may be available in microfiche, but nothing after 2004 was published in fiche format.

Please contact Melissa Belvadi, UPEI Collections Librarian,  if you have any questions or would like assistance relating to this or any other library-resources related matter.

Note: If the ELC is closed and you need immediate access, then please ask me – my office is MH 303.

TIME TO WRITE: UPEI’S FACULTY WRITERS RETREAT

If you have difficulty carving out uninterrupted time for writing, if you struggle with motivating yourself to write, or if you would simply like the supportive collaboration of a writing retreat, consider Time to Write, UPEI’s faculty writers retreat.  Time to write will be held November 8-12 (location to be determined), and will cost participants $200 (which includes four nights accommodation, meals and snacks).

Is Time to Write for You?

Your project must be at a stage where sustained writing time makes sense. Your research and/or data collection and analysis must be completed to the point that you are ready to write. You must also be prepared to commit to the full program: a total of 3½ days focused on writing.

The retreat is open to tenured and tenure stream University of Prince Edward Island faculty in any Department/Faculty/School.

Questions or Concerns?

Please direct any questions or concerns you may have about Time to Write to Dave Atkinson, Research Communications Officer, 620-5117.

MAKING YOUR RESEARCH MORE VISIBLE ON THE WEB

Hello everyone! I am working with Integrated Communications to get our faculty’s research projects some coverage. I know some of you have already been talking with Dave Atkinson from IC, but if anyone has a project you would like some coverage on, please let me know. Together Dave and I can make sure the campus and wider community are aware of the research our faculty is doing.

Also, if you would like a UPEI WordPress site for your research, just let me know and I can put you in touch with IC. These are external sites that allow you to control what goes up on them without going through IC every time. They can be linked from your faculty profiles on the web. (check out Kate Tilleczek’s here). If you’d like a list of your published works on there as well, the Island Scholar program in the Robertson Library can pull that together to put on your profile.

If you have any questions please let me know.

Many thanks,
Jill

PHOTOCOPIER SOFTWARE CHANGE

As noted in several meetings, we have been conscientiously trying to reduce the amount of paper used in the Faculty of Education.  To that end, new software has been added to the photocopier and each instructor currently teaching has been given an allotment of copies.  This software has changed the login procedure, and instructions have been posted at the photocopier.  We request that everyone please continue to be mindful of being as paperless as possible.  To achieve this goal, please post copies of course outlines, course readings and handouts on Moodle rather than printing.  Thank you everyone for all your efforts to make this a greener academic year!

PEER RECOGNITION PROGRAM INTRODUCTION

Human Resources is ready to roll out UPEI’s new Peer Recognition Program for all employees—a program that will be named by you!

This program is meant to be fun, informal, and a simple way to say ‘thank you’ to your colleagues for just about anything. The nomination form is located on the HR forms web page. Once a month, HR will make a random draw from all of the submissions received. That’s it. It’s no more complicated than a simple form submission to HR.

While telling one another that we appreciate each other should be obvious, no one does this often enough or is specific about what the other person did. So if your cleaner did an excellent job in your classroom, if your faculty member brought in a yummy treat, or if a staff person went over and above on a project, this is simply a way to acknowledge that activity and say thank-you!

So, when you want to share your appreciation, go to the HR website and nominate a co-worker. Anyone can nominate in accordance with the simple criteria on the form. All submissions will be summarized and posted on a monthly basis as will the winner’s information. A small prize will be awarded monthly, while a larger prize draw will be drawn annually from all names submitted for nomination.

NAME THE PROGRAM! Other organizations have “Shout-Outs”, RAVE’s, or other thank-you programs, but we want you to name UPEI’s peer recognition program. Entries can be emailed to humanresource@upei.ca where a team of seasoned specialists will pick the best submission. There will be a very nice prize for the person that submits the successful name so be creative! Name ideas should be sent before September 30th, 2013. The name will be chosen in early October.

Start saying thank you to your co-workers and let’s recognize one another for the great work that each of us do every day.

Thanks!

Ryan Johnston
Director of Human Resources

NAME CHANGE

Linda Garrie & GrandboysHello everyone,

As many of you know, on August 3, I married my best friend and partner of six years, Garrie Young. Many family and friends were in attendance, including all of my children and my two grandkids. I’ve attached a picture of my three favourite guys!

Just wanted to thank everyone for their best wishes and to let you know that I’m now officially Linda Gillan Young. As of tomorrow my email address is”‘lgillanyoung@upei.ca“. BTW for those of you who may wonder, ‘Gillan’ is my maiden name – and yes, I’m 100% Irish. Garrie says the only thing missing is the red hair!

Research professors from across Canada are already using this free one-stop centralized platform for posting research opportunities. Similarly, students can also view these opportunities for free.  Students at each university can simply enter their university’s name or location on the top search bar, and find positions that interest them at their respective universities. GoResearch.ca has been featured on CBC Radio, Science.ca, TRIUMF, UniversityAffairs, and other media.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS

THE ACORN PRESS:  THE GARDEN FURTHER TRANSFORMED

Published in 1982, The Garden Transformed: Prince Edward Island 1945-1980 was a series of essays which considered the possibility that the “Island way of life” was mythological and/or passé. The eleven contributors – Islanders, Come-From-Aways, and Outsiders, but all with an Island connection – discussed the themes of history, politics, CFAs, land use, agriculture, tourism, development, education, language, and transition, but recognized that several issues remained untouched. In a 1982 review of the book by John Eldon Green, he pointed out many of the missing pieces, some of which were anecdotes known only to a few, but suggested that the gaps could be filled in 2001 when the Garden was revisited.

It has taken slightly longer to get a group of eager people around a coffee table at Casa Mia on a Saturday morning to start the process, but less than two hours to come up with a theme for the 2014/15 version of Garden and a list of people who might be interested in contributing.

What do we hope to achieve? We would like to see The Garden Further Transformed (working title) discuss, lament, envision, debate, or otherwise examine the evolving sense of community in the context of four pillars of sustainability – social (including education and health), environment, economy, and culture – from 1980 to the present, and include a vision of/for the future. Thematic areas for the collection include, in addition to the four pillars: immigration, politics, fisheries, tourism, other economic sectors, labour, life-style and social change, social welfare, technology and media.

Has the “Island way of life” been erased or does there still exist, perhaps in a different format, a distinctive way of life that reflects the changing demographics, technologies, economic realities, social values, and other transformative forces? How? What does the future hold for the Garden province or is that metaphor, too, part of the mythical past?

There are many more questions. Initially, please e-mail a 300-500 word abstract/proposal and a 2-3 sentence bio, as well as contact information to gtr@bellaliant.net no later than 1 February 2014. The abstract and bio should be sent as a single e-mail attachment.

As well, if you know someone else whose work falls within these parameters, and who would make an excellent contribution, please pass along her/his name and contact information to us.

The editorial team will review the abstracts, and determine which proposals best fit within the framework and focus of this project and book.

INSTRUCTOR HANDBOOK MODIFICATION

Please note that a modification has been made to the Handbook for Instructors.  With respect to the section on Class Attendance (Page 10), when the handbook was originally posted this section suggested that if a student missed more than two classes, the Coordinator must be informed.  This has been modified to more accurately indicate that once two classes have been missed, the Coordinator of the appropriate program should be notified.

SCENT FREE SPACE

Dear colleagues,

faced-share-airIt has come to my attention that it is important to remind everyone that we work in a scent-free space. Many people are very sensitive to perfumes and other scents – for me, for examples, I get stuffed up and have trouble breathing and my eyes start scratching and I get a headache. Others are susceptible to migraines.

I ask you to be PLEASE be considerate of your colleagues and our students.

THANKS

Miles

BE MINDFUL OF PAPER USE

Dear colleagues,

Happy New Year! It is that time again!

As you prepare your courses for the upcoming year, please be mindful of our aim to become as paperless as possible in Faculty. To achieve this goal, please:

  • post a copy of your course outline on your course Moodle- please do not print;
  • please post readings and handouts on Moodle – please do not print;

Please also note that ALL print jobs done through Central printing will require approval from the Main Faculty Office. This applies to teaching but not professor’s research accounts, of course.

We look forward to a great year….and a greener one!

Miles

CAE GRADUATION

On September 7th, 18  adult learners will graduate  with their Certificate in Adult Education (CAE).  The celebration will be held at the Culinary Institute at 6:30pm.

For most of these grads completion of the CAE will give them their teaching credential for a teaching position at Holland College or for teaching trades in the high school system. Four grads are involved in education in the private sector. All courses were offered on a part-time basis and the students completed courses while holding down full-time employment – most completing their 12 courses within two years!

In addition, four individuals will be recognized  for completion of their BEd (HRD).

The guest speaker will be Jeff MacDonald, one of last year’s BEd (K-12) grads.

For more information, please contact Leona McIsaac-Moran.
