HOLD THE DATE:  BROWN BAG LUNCH FEATURING CHRIS BENJAMIN

C_Benjjamin bookChris Benjamin is a freelance writer and journalist living in Halifax who has written a book, Indian School Road, which documents some of the history associated with the Subenacadie Residential School. He has agreed to come to UPEI on September 18 to present a Brown Bag lunch that will include a reading from his book. We have booked Main Faculty Lounge for this event. The Brown Bag starts at 12:00 and will finish by 1:00 though the dialogue may continue.

One of the pertinent issues that Chris addresses in his book focuses on the role and responsibility of non-Aboriginal Canadians in the process of reconciliation and healing. This is stressed by Justice Murray Sinclair in his comments on CBC last week. Please contact Fiona Walton if you would like further information about this valuable visit.

Please click here to visit Chris Benjamin’s website.

MY FAVOURITE TEACHER — MAN ON THE STREET

As we mark the end of another academic year in teacher education in the Faculty, we share this short video of people reflecting on teachers that made a difference in their life.

As new pre-service teachers prepare to start with our Faculty next week, take a moment to recall your favourite teacher, and reflect on the important job the Faculty has in preparing our students for this important profession.

~~~
Who was your favourite teacher? (Tell us in the comments!)
Dear Miss MacLure,
I just wanted to post a wee thank you for English lessons that stayed with me through my life.  As much as my younger self hated to admit it, the proper use of commas really was useful life information.  I also wanted to thank you for your marvelous sense of humour, which made those lessons far less tedious.  You didn’t even get (very) angry when your Christmas tree was stolen after a band concert and reassembled in the gym.  Not that I know anything about that.
With thanks,
Karen-Anne
From February 14–19, 2015, the Faculty of Education, UPEI and the Government of Nunavut, Department of Education delivered two graduate-level courses to 50 Nunavut teachers, literacy coaches, vice-principals, and principals. The courses were delivered in Baker Lake and Rankin Inlet, NU. The first course was ED511: Proactive Instructional Leadership in Nunavut Communities (25 students). It was co-taught by Bev Hill and Becky Tootoo. For this course, students explored the responsibilities, roles, and tasks of principals and other educational leaders and how they foster a positive, inclusive, and culturally responsive school community. The second course was ED513: Leadership of the School Improvement Process in Nunavut Communities (with a focus on literacy instruction) (25 students). It was taught by Sheila Bacon. Not only did students learn about policy implementation and program accountability, for this course, they were engaged with current literature on literacy leadership/coaching. An overarching aim of both of these 36-hour courses is to support Nunavut educators as they embrace the historical, cultural, and educational realms of Nunavut.
Just a reminder to submit book orders for Spring/Summer 2015 classes to the UPEI Bookstore as soon as possible. You can conveniently order online or by email.
If there are access codes/e-books for online course content, please include the ISBN for these items in your order. The Bookstore would like to give students more choices with the convenience of being able to pick up all of their course materials on campus. Many students take advantage of the different forms of payment offered such as charging to their student account.
Please be sure to send the correct ISBN, especially for text packages and/or e-books to ensure ordering of the proper text books. If there is no text book required for a course, it would be greatly appreciated to notify the Bookstore also. Also, indicate if your course is cross listed.
If you require students to have other course materials you can email to ensure they will have sufficient quantities in the store.
